Private John A Keeler was born 1841 in North Castle, New York to parents Joseph and Caroline Ferris Keeler. He was single when he enlisted on August 31, 1862 in Bedford, New York with Company E of the 172nd Infantry Regiment for a two-year period. He received a $100 signing bonus. The 172nd Infantry Regiment was disbanded in December 1862 and transferred to the 6th Artillery Regiment. Private Keeler died at age 22, in the service "of sickness" in Harper's Ferry, Virginia on May 9, 1863.

His widow, Susanne, is shown in the 1890 Veterans' census for Banksville, New York. He ist on NY Data Base nor on Ancestry.com 1861-3.
